________________________________________________________________

Catches for out of country sites is being applied for with NARMS as this hospital offers more Midwife type control and also uses Midwives and trains students. Not sure if when this approval will come in.Will update web site and post to yahoo group when it does. 1st trip in Nov 2011 went well with student being allowed to have lots of good hands on and experiences. English is the spoken language there buy staff and some of the locals. Now I believe the births count as active participants along with the newborn exams. Sign offs will be available for this along with some skills done.

  • Included in trip cost: Meals (basic mostly vegetarian bring extra if you want to supplement this .We eat a lot of local fresh veggies, fruit, beans and rice etc  ), transportation from airport (if you arrive later may have extra taxi fare),lodging ,local transportation , preceptor fees and airfare for preceptor.

a must for all students going as this is where we network details for trips coming up !

Advanced students will be allowed catches on  trips with LM or CPM or local Drs supervising as long as hospital staff and trip Midwife are comfortable with your skills and behavior.

Remember we are there for training and to also to be a blessing to them. Not to judge or confront how they do things. For an example of the type of environment you will be working in; IVs are done on most women, labor/PP rooms have a lot  ladies per room (many on the floor), there is a lack of basic supplies, episiotomy  is the norm  etc .Staff does great with the supplies and volume of ladies they care for but the need is great ! Not for the timid unless you just want to help out as a doula. all moms go natural, walk around in labor and breastfeed. (Although some give in to the grandmas and DONT breastfeed the 1st few days as they think the 1st milk is bad for some reason.Dirty water is sometimes given so there is lots of breastfeeding training also needed.

We are not guaranteeing any certain #s of births but the hospital we are working at in MBARARA has 20-30 births a day with a 28% c-sec rate .They say its “high”because of the transports from outlying clinics and hospitals sending in complications. Vaginal breaches and vbacs are sometimes done. There is lots of chances to practice many skills if your ready to do them. Its quite fast paces here so dont expect a lot of on the job walk through training but you will normally have help and preceptors around.

We will probably be doing some teaching to the patients, staff, residents, Drs etc so if you can find any DVD’s or VHS taped for prenatal clinic please let Lisa Know.

Pictures of previous trips can be seen in the resources section of the site.

Request an application as soon as you know the dates you would like to go on the trip..Note :Application is in Yahoo group files section.Fill out and snail mail as soon as you plan to go .Can wait to send $All money is due 1 month before trip so we can declare the trip a go, get tickets, etc. We need a minimum of 3 students to consider the trip, with a maximum of 8 students.
